IDENTIFYING THE RATE OF STRONGYLOIDES STERCORALIS INFECTION AND RELATED FACTORS IN SOLDIERS ON THE BORDER IN SOUTHWEST VIETNAM Tran Minh Tuong (Southern Military Preventive Medical Center)

Strongyloide s stercoralis

Objective + Investigation of Strongyloides stercoralis infection rate. + Determination of related factors on Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

Subjects and method Subjects: 752 soldiers working on the border in Southwest Vietnam were studied during the period from 4/2013 to 8/2014. Method: Descriptive study

Results and Discussion

DataNumberRate (%) Infected Uninfected Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infections The number of participants who were infected with Strongyloides stercoralis was 40 (5.32%), and uninfected was 712 (94.68%). The rate of infection around the world is 2-20%. According to many authors, precise data on the prevalence of this disease cannot be assessed because there are no symptoms and a lack of adequate statistics.

Breakdown of worm infection by age group Age groupPositiveNegativep (2.82%)276 (97.18%) p< (4.20%)251 (95.80%) (8.92%)163 (91.06%) (15.52%)22 (81.48%) Lowest – highest age Average age ± ± 7.79p>0.05 There is a difference in Strongyloides stercoralis infection in different age groups, with statistical significance at p<0.05. Those aged over 40 have the highest prevalence of infection (52.5%).

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among those with regular professional contact with soil InfectedUninfectedTotal Yes 32 (80.0%)417 (58.57%)449 p<0.05 No 8 (20.0%)299 (41.43%)303 Total OR=2.9 p OR Regular direct contact with soil Those who have regular direct contact with soil in our study had a Strongyloides stercoralis infection risk 2.9 times higher than those who did not, with p <0.05.

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection with regard to eating vegetables and drinking unpurified water InfectedUninfectedTotal Regularly 29 (72.5%)413 (58.1%)442 Irregular 11 (27.5%)299(41.9%)310 Total Frequency of eating vegetables and drinking unpurified water P OR p<0.05 OR= 1.9 The group in the habit of eating raw vegetables or drinking unpurified water regularly, had a Strongyloides stercoralis infection rate 1.9 times higher than the group who did not have those habits, with p <0.05.

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in people with a history of stomach pain InfectedUninfectedTotal Yes 24 (80.0%)296 (58.57%)449 No 16 (20.0%)416 (41.43%)303 Total In the group with a history of stomach pain, the infection risk was 2.2 times higher than the group with no history of stomach pain, with p<0.05. A history of stomach pain P OR p<0.05 OR = 2.2

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in people who do/do not de-worm regularly InfectedUninfectedTotal Yes 21 (27.4%)392 (72.6%)413 No 9 (25.5%)320(74.5%)339 Total De-worming P OR p<0.05 OR= 1.9 The prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in the group who had not periodically de-wormed themselves was 1.9 times higher than the other group. This difference is statistically significant, with p<0.05.

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection with regard to feeding dogs and cats Infected Uninfected Total Yes 16 (40.0%)409 (57.4%)425 No 24 (60.0%)303 (42.6%)327 Total Feeding dogs/cats P p>0.05 The prevalence of worm infection among people who feed dogs and cats compared to people who do not, has no difference for statistical significance (p> 0.05).

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in people who do not de-worm cats and dogs regularly InfectedUninfectedTotal Yes 8 (20.0%)579 (81.3%) No 32 (80.0%)133 (18.7%) Total Periodic de-worming of dogs and cats P p> The prevalence of worm infection among people who feed dogs and cats without de-worming their pets, compared with people who feed and regularly de-worm their pets, has no difference for statistical significance (p> 0.05).

CONCLUSION The Strongyloides stercoralis infection rate is 5.32% it is most likely to affect people aged over 40 it is closely linked to jobs or regular habits involving direct contact with the soil.

CONCLUSION The risk factors that increase the prevalence of infection include: Often eating raw vegetables, and washing raw vegetables improperly. A history of stomach pain. No periodic de-worming for people.
