THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION

CAUSES

 SLAVES WERE DISSATISFIED WITH HOW THE FRENCH GOVERNED THE COLONY  CRUELTY AND BRUTALITY INFLICTED ON THE SLAVES BY THEIR MASTERS  TOUSSAINT’S CHARISMATIC INFLUENCE ON THE PEOPLE OF HAITI  SOME WEALTHY FREE PEOPLE OF COLOUR WERE GRANTED CITEZENSHIP,THIS CAUSED DISCONTENT AMONG SLAVES.

CAUSES  POLITICAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN FRANCE  CONCEPTS OF LIBERTY,EQUALITY AND FRATERNITY FROM THE FRENCH REVOLUTION WERE TRANSMITED TO ST.DOMINGUE  THE MAJORITY OF THE SLAVES ON THE COLONY WERE BORN IN AFRICA AN WERE ACCUSTOMED TO LIFE AS FREE INDIVIDUALS.  ANTI SLAVERY MESSAGES WERE BEING CIRCULATED AROUND THE ISLAND  THE OBVIOUS NEED FOR FREEDOM FROM THEIR OPRESSORS

ORGANIZATION

 VOODOO PLAYED A PART IN THE ORGANIZATION AND IDEAS WERE FINALISED AMONGST LEADERS  SUCKING OF BLOOD FROM A STUCK PIG,BOUKMAN INITIATED HIS FOLLOWERS BY A RELIGIOUS VOODOO PRAYER  MEETINGS WERE HELD TO DISCUSS THE RIGHTS OF SLAVES  REVOLUTIONARY LITERATURE WAS CIRCULATED AMONG THEM  THE SEIEZURE OF ARMS FOR THEIR FIGHTING FOURCE

ORGANIZATION  ORGANIZATION INTO CAMPS OF REVOLUTIONARIES  WORKERS JOINED ARMS AS SOLDIERS  REVOLUTIONARIES SET UP CAMP IN ALL THE DISTRICTS THEY HAD PILLAGED  Toussaint, Francois, Biassou, Macaya, Dessalines, and Christophe all played a role in military leaders who aided with the organization

ORGANIZATION  TOUSSAINT’S DISTRUST FOR FRENCE POLITICS MAY HAVE BEEN USED AS A TOOL TO GAIN THE BLACKS SUPPORT  RELIGION PLAYED A MOJOR PART IN THE ORGANIZATION  MASS GATHERINGS IN THE WOODS  LANGUAGE WAS USED AS A BARRIER, IN THE ORGANIZATION OF THE REBELLION

SUCCESS

REASONS FOR SUCCESS  SLAVES HAD RESSILIANT ATTITUDES AND DID NOT GIVE UP AFTER A PERIODE OF TIME,THE REVOLUTION IS SAID TO HAVE LASTED FOR 12 YEARS,WITH A SERIES OF UNGOING REVOLTS  EVEN AFTER THE DEATH OF GREAT LEADERS,SLAVES HAD INDIPENDENT MINDS TO PROCEED WITH THE REVOLUTION  SLAVES HAD BATTLE TACTICS WHICH THEY USED TO THEIR ADVANTAGE OVER THE WHITES

REASONS FOR SUCCESS  MANY WHITES BEGAN TO SUPPORT AN INDEPENDENT MOVEMENT WHEN TARIFFS WERE BEING PLACED ON IMPORTED ITEMS.  BY 1792 THE SLAVES CONTROLED ONE THIRD OF THE ISLAND,THEREFORE HAVING THE UPPER HAND.  FORMER SLAVES MANAGED TO CRUSH THE ADVANCES OF THE FRENCE AND BRITISH FORCES WHO WERE AGAINST THEM.

 l’Overture EXPANDED THE REVOLT AN CONQUERED SANTO DOMINGO  HE ABOLISHED SLAVERY IN SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES AND APPOINTED HIMSELF GOVERNOR-GENERAL  l’Overture WAS CAPTURED AND DIED IN PRISON IN FRANCE

END RESULTS  Jean-Jacques Dessalines LEAD THE REVOLUTIONARIES AT THE BATTLE OF VERTIERES ON NOVEMBER 18,1803  FRENCE FORCES WERE DEFEATED IN THIS BATTLE  ON JANUARY 1,1804 Dessalines DECLEARED THE NATION INDEPENDENT AND RENAMED IT HAITI!!!
