Overview Gold in the periodic table About gold Properties of gold Uses of gold Units for gold

Gold in the periodic table Group 11 Period 6 Gold

About gold A yellow metallic element Transitional metal Atomic Symbol: Au Atomic Number: 79 Atomic Mass: 197(3s.f)

Properties of gold High boiling and melting point Boiling point: 3080Kelvin Melting Point: 1338Kelvin Most ductile of all metals Most malleable of all metals Soft Very unreactive Malleability: Ability to be flattened into sheets Ductility : Ability to be drawn into wires

Uses of gold Gold is mainly used for making jewellery as it is a very unreactive metal. Thus, they remain shiny and attractive. Gold does not oxidise, rust, corrode and tarnish, which is why gold is so expensive.

Units for gold/ K ALLOY Any gold lesser than 24k is an K stands for karat. Used to measure the purity of gold. 24k gold means pure or solid gold.(100% gold) 18k gold means 75% pure gold(18/24 gold). The remaining 25%(6/24) is made up of other metals such as silver. Any gold lesser than 24k is an ALLOY
