THREE LESSONS  1. What is Entrepreneurship  2. Idea Generation, Opportunity Recognition, and Feasibility Analysis  3. The Business Plan Course Description: Welcome to Entrepreneurship. This course introduces students to basic concepts and skills in entrepreneurship. Students will learn the definition of entrepreneurship and entrepreneur and learn about the skills needed to be a successful entrepreneurship through exploration of their own skills and research into a successful entrepreneur. Students will focus on considerations to approach opportunity, how to perform preliminary market research and develop a feasibility study. Students will also examine the connection between how conducting a feasibility analysis can contribute to a successful business outcome. Finally, students will learn how to develop a comprehensive business plan to help in realizing the launch of their venture.

1. WHAT IS ENTREPRENEURSHIP? Objectives:  Define entrepreneur and entrepreneurship  Explain the history of entrepreneurship  Evaluate qualifications needed to become an entrepreneur  Explain the success story of an entrepreneur in the field of your choosing.  Resources: 7 required readings, one video and 3 assignments  Could serve as a stand alone lesson of two to three weeks.

1. WHAT IS ENTREPRENEURSHIP? (CONT). Assignments: 1. What is Entrepreneurship?  Written as a two page essay (describing what entrepreneurship is, role of the entrepreneur and brief history of entrepreneurship), but can be expanded. 2. Are you Tough Enough?  Online quiz gauging students qualities as related to those of an entrepreneur. Could be expanded to include a video presentation on how the student feels they meet these qualities (self reflection). 3. A Success Story of an Entrepreneur?  Presentation of a successful entrepreneur. Can be expanded to include primary difficulties faced by the entrepreneur, primary competitors in the marketplace, why the entrepreneur felt there was room in the market for their product/service, and how the entrepreneur financed their product’s introduction to the market. Options may include: 10 page essay, 5 minute video, 20 minute slide presentation, 5 minute multimedia mashup.

2. IDEA GENERATION, OPPORTUNITY RECOGNITION, AND FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS Objectives:  Explain how to recognize business opportunities and idea generation  Explain the importance of various types of research  Explain the attributes of an attractive industry.  Demonstrate how to screen ideas/opportunities and determine feasibility & potential success/failure.  Resources: 8 readings, 3 videos and 3 assignments  Could serve as a stand alone module of three to four weeks OR combined with Lesson 1 for a module of six weeks.

2. IDEA GENERATION, OPPORTUNITY RECOGNITION, AND FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS (CONT.) Assignments: 1. Researching and Recognizing Opportunity  Required internet research about possible entrepreneurial activities can be expanded to include a first person interview of an individual who is an entrepreneur 2. Research and Attributes of an Attractive Industry  After completing a venture opportunity exercise, student will write a summary paper to describe viable products or services to bring to market and describe why an opportunity exists now for those items. Can be expanded to a longer essay including information on primary competitors, how one might finance the business and why their product service is unique. 3. Composing the Feasibility Study  Completion of feasibility study on your proposed product and presentation describing the results of your study (including an elevator pitch). Variations could include 5 minute video, 15 min slide presentation, 5 minute Multimedia mashup.

3. THE BUSINESS PLAN Objectives:  Explain the purpose of developing a business plan  List the components of a business plan  Explain the audience of a business plan  List common flaws that should be avoided when writing a business plan  Write a business plan  Resources: 10 readings, 3 videos, 1 resource, 1 assignment  As a stand alone module would span about four weeks. Combined with other two lessons, modules would span about 10 weeks.

3. THE BUSINESS PLAN (CONT). Assignment: 1. Writing the Business Plan  Comprehensive in nature. Should be reviewed and commented on by others. Expansion could include the requirement of having a small business association or similar organization to offer comments. Other activities in this module may include creating logos, updating the elevator pitch, or marketing materials and/or websites for their business.
