Device for the Presentation of Olfactory Stimuli to Monkeys Team Members Kevin Campbell (BWIG) Sarah Kolpin (Communications) Wyatt Potter (Team Leader) Heather Shaner (BSAC)

Problem Statement Build a device for use in research that compares the ability of young and old monkeys to sense tastes and smells (stimuli).

Design Objectives Present two different stimuli (tastes or scents) Present two different stimuli (tastes or scents) -i.e. Two concentrations of tastes- one sweat, one bland Monkey makes a choice that must be final Monkey makes a choice that must be final - i.e. Monkey chooses reward door that corresponds to the sweater to the two stimuli- other door must lock Sensitivity Sensitivity - locking must be immediate

Design Objectives Provide a reward Provide a reward -i.e. Monkey gets a peanut for opening correct door. No peanut for wrong choice. Readily movable between cages Readily movable between cages Durable, non-corrosive Durable, non-corrosive Simple operation - as automated as possible Simple operation - as automated as possible

Original Mechanical Model Constructed a mechanical prototype Constructed a mechanical prototype – Gravity operated locks – Durable – Problems Doors opened sideways Doors opened sideways Cumbersome to reset and moving parts Cumbersome to reset and moving parts – Corrections Primary change- move hinge to top of door Primary change- move hinge to top of door Minor changes- rounding lip and add internal divider Minor changes- rounding lip and add internal divider

Mechanical Model

Mechanical Model (locked tripped)

Electrical Model Compatible with the Mechanical Shell Compatible with the Mechanical Shell Door hinges on top instead of side Door hinges on top instead of side Automatic locking mechanism Automatic locking mechanism –Integral component is flip/flop circuitry –Photodiode emitter and sensor pair on each door –Solenoid locking mechanism positioned below door lip –Battery powered – 9 volt

Electrical Model Simple Simple –Easy reset button –On/Off switch Problems Problems –Data must be recorded manually –Client wants more functions available

Electrical Circuit Schematic

Possible Improvements Design automated fluid feeder system Design automated fluid feeder system Design automated reward system Design automated reward system Design microcomputer control Design microcomputer control –Provides many unique options for device –Take the place of the flip/flop circuitry Design and add accessories to Device Design and add accessories to Device –LEDs on front panel etc

Current Focus Microcontroller (minicomputer) Microcontroller (minicomputer) –Can have workable model by end of semester –Flip/flop circuitry replaced by Microcontroller –Can be integrated with current electrical setup –Can manage a variety of functions

Microcomputer Model One step higher than flip/flop One step higher than flip/flop Manages various aspects of experiment Manages various aspects of experiment Very versatile functions Very versatile functions Uses P-BASIC programs written on a PC Uses P-BASIC programs written on a PC Completely free running and portable once program files are transferred on Completely free running and portable once program files are transferred on

Microcomputer Schematic

Preliminary Design LED Display LED Display –P11 & P12 –Indicator lights Liquid Crystal Display (Output) Liquid Crystal Display (Output) –P13 –Two lines of text Detector of Door Status (Input) Detector of Door Status (Input) –P6 & P7 –Sends signal to output for resulting action

Preliminary Design Solenoid Door Lock (Output) Solenoid Door Lock (Output) –P8 & P9 –Lock door as in electrical model Control Push Buttons (Input) Control Push Buttons (Input) –P0, P1, P2, & P3 –Standby, Start, Menu, Select Currently Unassigned Currently Unassigned –P4, P5, P10, P14, P15 –Could be implemented for future use –Can be input or output

Possible Microcontroller Functions Setting the stimulus sequence Setting the stimulus sequence Standby mode with dual lockout Standby mode with dual lockout Record reaction time, response data, errors Record reaction time, response data, errors Display status/ data messages on LCD panel Display status/ data messages on LCD panel Transfer experimental results to database via PC RS-232 Serial Port Transfer experimental results to database via PC RS-232 Serial Port Menu that can control indicator lights, anti- jitter, door lockout, automatic reset etc Menu that can control indicator lights, anti- jitter, door lockout, automatic reset etc
