Defining niches Spatial what are the positions in a farm that would allow to integrate legumes in the current farmer cropping system? 1.Where could we grow promising fodder species to increase livestock productivity 2.Where could we grow legumes (example staking) to increase stake availability and then climbing bean production? Could be : 1.Degraded lands where legumes could produce better than other plants with minimum inputs. 2.Specific spots in a farm: field edges 3. Specific intercropping

Defining niches From the LegumeChoice tool : Suppose that erosion has more scoring in DRC Mucuna, calliandra are the fitting legume options Niches Respond to questions: Where could we plant erosion control legumes without compromising existing cropping? Or What is the entry point for controlling erosion using Calliandra or mucuna? Field boundaries : ok for Calliandra, not ok for mucuna

Defining niches Temporal Are there specific timing that could allow integration of legumes (related to seasonality)? Exploring planting legumes during dry season cropping Irrigation availability Varieties that could be integrated in other crops (relay cropping ) allowing 2 crops : short duration, growing on residual moisture,….

Integrating diversity (typology, gender, …) Demonstrating various simple options : Per location to accommodate environment factors Erosion prone areas may have different needs than less erosion area though within the same sites. Per typology/ gender : to accommodate social diversity Resource constrained farmers vs less constrained Farmers need to see what they miss or the risk from not using a technology.

Integrating diversity (typology, gender, …) Farmers need to see what they miss or the risk from not using a technology. Within trials, technologies need to be compared: 1. Design trials that include more than 1 technology, but not many, run by farmers 2. Provide farmers with required inputs and let farmers test the technologies. 3. Monitoring by farmers and project technical group 4. Conduct field day and evaluation with more farmers Technologies in the trials can vary between farmers and location
