REVIEW OF PHOTO TERMS & INTRODUCTION TO DSLR CAMERA MODES PHOTO 2 - 8/20/13 [A DAY]

PHOTOGRAPHY ๏ literally means: ๏ PHOTO = light ๏ GRAPHY = drawing/writing ๏ “drawing/writing with light” ๏ main purpose is to: ๏ communicate visually with others ๏ communicate = to exchange information, news or ideas ๏ communication is a process - you have to give information with a purpose in order to receive constructive feedback from your viewer

DSLR CAMERA - WORDS TO UNDERSTAND- ๏ DSLR CAMERA ๏ a camera with detachable/interchangeable lenses, a mirror, and a digital image sensor to create digital images ๏ EXPOSURE ๏ how much light is used with the camera to create a photograph, measured with aperture, shutter speed, & ISO ๏ NORMAL EXPOSURE ๏ just the right amount of light used by the aperture, shutter, and ISO to create a well-balanced photograph with shadows, highlights, & midtones ๏ UNDER EXPOSED ๏ not enough light was used by the aperture, shutter, and ISO to create a well-balanced photograph - it will be a dark or possibly all black photograph ๏ OVER EXPOSED ๏ too much light was used by the aperture, shutter, and ISO to create a well-balanced photograph - it will be a very light, or possibly all white photograph

DSLR CAMERA - WORDS TO UNDERSTAND- ๏ LENS ๏ the grouping of glass in the front of the camera that focuses the image in the camera ๏ APERTURE ๏ the adjustable opening inside the lens that allows light to enter the camera ๏ f/STOP ๏ the way the aperture is measured in size - how big or small the aperture is ๏ SHUTTER ๏ a curtain inside the camera that covers the digital image sensor ๏ SHUTTER SPEED ๏ how quickly or slowly the shutter (curtain) opens & closes to allow light to hit the digital image sensor

DSLR CAMERAS - WORDS TO UNDERSTAND- ๏ DIGITAL IMAGE SENSOR ๏ a small, electronic chip that is covered in light sensitive components that convert light into a digital image ๏ most like film in analog - old school - cameras ๏ ISO ๏ how light sensitive the digital image sensor will be for your exposure

AUTOMATIC CAMERA - MODES - ๏ AUTOMATIC MODE = A, AUTO, ๏ the camera makes all the decisions about the correct exposure - chooses the right aperture, shutter speed, & ISO for a normal exposure ๏ MANUAL MODE = M ๏ the photographer - YOU - make all the decisions about the correct exposure - chooses the right aperture, shutter speed, & ISO for a normal exposure ๏ SHUTTER PRIORITY MODE = Tv, TV ๏ the photographer - YOU - make the decision about the shutter speed ๏ the camera makes all the decisions about the correct aperture & ISO for a normal exposure with the shutter speed you chose ๏ APERTURE PRIORITY MODE = Av, AV ๏ the photographer - YOU - make the decision about the aperture ๏ the camera makes all the decisions about the correct shutter speed & ISO for a normal exposure with the aperture you chose

DSLR CAMERA - MODES - ๏ SCENE MODE = SC, SCENE, CLIP ART IMAGE ๏ you choose which ‘scene’ you’re photographing ๏ i.e. sunny beach, indoors, sports, night, portrait, close ups, buildings etc. ๏ the camera chooses PRE SET EXPOSURE SETTINGS of the aperture, shutter speed, & ISO for a normal exposure ๏ not ideal because the camera doesn’t know exactly what the light conditions are where you are photographing, at the specific time you’re photographing ๏ the pre-set exposure settings are averages specified by the camera manufacturer ๏ PROGRAM MODE = P (NOT P FOR PROFESSIONAL!) ๏ you choose which ISO and white balance to use, as well as control the flash setting ๏ the camera makes all the decisions about the correct shutter speed & aperture for a normal exposure with the ISO & flash setting you chose
