School Year Session 4: October 30, 2013 Catching Student Thinking in the Web 1.1

Agenda Digging Deeper into MP3 Break Homework Discussion District Planning Time Homework and closing remarks 1.2

Learning Intentions & Success Criteria Learning Intentions: We are learning to identify the Standards for Mathematical Practice in teacher and student moves. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we identify teacher and student actions in two video clips that provide evidence of Standard for Mathematical Practice

1.4 Digging Deeper into MP3 Activity 1: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of other. Read MP3 Highlight key verbs that would help describe student behaviors.

1.5 Digging Deeper into MP3 Activity 1: Divide your poster into 4 quadrants. What are some student behaviors that come out in MP3? Student Behaviors

1.6 Digging Deeper into MP3 Activity 1: Read the “Look For’s” document. As you watch the videos, use the note taking guide to help identify some student and teacher behaviors as it relates to MP3. Video 2Video 1

1.7 Digging Deeper into MP3 Activity 1: After watching the video and reading Henry’s Look For’s, what are some student behaviors you would like to add to the chart and what are some additional teacher “Look For’s”? Student BehaviorsTeacher Look For’s

Break 1.12

1.9 Digging Deeper into MP3 Activity 1: Work with your content group to solve the given task. Consider how you might use the task in your content area. What learning outcomes might you identify for the task? Record the learning outcomes on your chart. Student BehaviorsTeacher Look For’s Task Expectations

1.10 Digging Deeper into MP3 Activity 1: Consider how you might use your task to address MP3. What actions might you take during planning to support students in working towards MP3? Record an outline of the plan on your chart. Student BehaviorsTeacher Look For’s Plan ForTask Expectations

1.11 Task Modification Using the MMP protocol, present and discuss the student work from your modified task. Guiding inquiries for question 4: In what ways did the modifications to the task provide students with opportunities to learn? To what extent does the student work show evidence of student learning? Activity 2:

1.12 Task Modification Reflecting on our analysis of Student Work: 1.What did you expect from students? 2.What did you get from looking at student work? 3.What are some claims to be made from the student work? 4.What considerations need to be made in the planning process? 5.How does the work connect to MP3? Activity 2:

Learning Intentions & Success Criteria Learning Intentions: We are learning to identify the Standards for Mathematical Practice in teacher and student moves. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we identify teacher and student actions in two video clips that provide evidence of Standard for Mathematical Practice

1.14 District Planning Time Reorganize into your district teams. With them: Continue your discussion from last time around your chosen focal Standards for Mathematical Practice. Select one or two of the SMP that you would like to focus your reform efforts on across your district team this year. As you discuss, consider what you might collect as evidence of student engagement in your focal SMPs. Activity 3:

1.15 Homework & Closing Remarks Homework: Complete your written reflection on your task modification and the analysis of the student work. Bring in a task to start planning for the semester project. Reflect on how you might incorporate the principles you are learning into the lesson or unit you have chosen for your main semester project. (Recall that this is a lesson or unit you plan to teach between November 20 and December 4.) Activity 4:
