Polluting Industries And Relocation To LEDC’s IB HL

Relocation Of Polluting Industries Maquiladora operations are foreign owned but employ local labour. They are US companies based in Mexico. The reasons for these operations/companies are that they have low labour costs, relaxed environmental legislation, and good access to US markets.

Problems Illegal Dumping. Air and Water Pollution. Enforcing Laws (Mexico). Health Issues. Respiratory Diseases.

Relocation Of Waste China imports 3 million tonnes of waste plastic and 15 million tonnes of paper and cardboard each year. A lot of countries waste gets exported to China. It’s cheaper for China to employ people to sort the material out due to its large workforce. Sorting of materials in this country can also cause health and land problems for example using acids to strip components from electrical goods.

Activities Using Geography For The IB Diploma P , answer the following… 1.Using Figure 2 (P109), what is the relationship between GDP and pollution? 2.Using Figure 4 (P110), what may be the reasons behind air pollution decreasing in developed countries but increasing in developing countries? 3.Using Figure 5 (P110), which industries contribute most to pollution? 4.How can exposure to pollution affect human health?
