Planet Mission A note to teachers Activity Description This presentation can be used to help consolidate the material learnt in the Planet Mission workshop. There is also an additional activity for pupils to create a postcard from their favourite planet. This presentation is designed to be teacher-led with further opportunities for individual work. We hope your class finds this activity interesting and useful. Should you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to send it to us. Planet Mission You have learned all about the solar system. How many of the planets can you remember? Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

Planet Mission In the workshop, you used your senses of sight, hearing, touch and smell to explore the planets. You discovered that : The planets are very different from the Earth They all have their own weather They all sound different

Are you ready for a quiz?

Which of these planets are gas giants? Mercury Venus Jupiter Saturn

Which one of these planets is covered in clouds ? Mercury Mars Venus Venus is completely covered in clouds. They do a good job of keeping the heat in and making Venus a very hot planet – the hottest planet in the solar system! Venus

Which two of these planets has a rocky surface ? Mercury Mars Jupiter Both of these planets are made of solid rock, like the Earth. Mercury and Mars

Which one of these planets is both hot and cold ? Saturn Mercury Venus Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the part facing the Sun gets very hot (450⁰C!). But the part facing away from the Sun gets very cold (-200⁰C!). This is because there is no air keep the heat in. Mercury

Magnetic Cloudy Red Dusty Mars Gas Giants Venus Stormy Hint: one of the words belongs with two planets! Well done!

Now… You’re going to make a postcard from your favourite planet! Choose your favourite planet Draw a picture of it You may want to write about what it would be like if you were visiting it! Greetings from ….
