Statistics Module

Statistics Statistics are a powerful tool for finding patterns in data and inferring important connections between events in the real world. 2

Statistical Concepts  Branches of Statistics Descriptive Inferential  Presenting Data  Descriptive Statistics Measures of Central Tendency Measures of Variation Shape of Distributions  Probability  Fundamentals of Hypothesis Testing 3

Five Basic Words of Statistics  Population  Sample  Parameter  Statistic  Variable 4

Population  All of the members of a group which you want to draw a conclusion. (i.e. Women in the army) 5

Sample  The part of the population selected for analysis. (i.e. Women in the army stationed in Iraq) 6

Parameter  A numerical measure that describes a characteristic of the population. (i.e. The percentage of women with children in the army) 7

Statistic  A numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a sample. (i.e. The percentage of women with children in the army who have completed a tour of duty in Iraq) 8

Variable  A characteristic of an item or an individual that will be analyzed using statistics. Discrete values Continuous values (i.e. The number of women with children in the army who have completed a tour of duty in Iraq that have been injured) 9

Five Basic Words  Branches of Statistics Descriptive Inferential  Presenting Data  Descriptive Statistics Measures of Central Tendency Measures of Variation Shape of Distributions  Probability  Fundamentals of Hypothesis Testing 10

Branches of Statistics  There are two branches the comprise the field of statistics. Descriptive Statistics Inferential Statistics 11

Descriptive Statistics  Descriptive Statistics is the branch of statistics that focuses on collecting, summarizing and presenting data. 12

Inferential Statistics  Inferential Statistics is the branch of statistics that analyzes sample data to draw conclusions about a population. 13

Conclusion of Module 10.1  We have concluded discussing Module 10.1, Statistics Introduction.
