Changing Energy Forms

How can energy change? Energy –The ability to cause change or to do work

Two forms of energy Kinetic –energy due to movement Potential –Energy of resting objects

Other forms of energy Chemical – stored in chemical bonds (ex- leaf) Mechanical – energy due to movement or position (ex – lever lifting a load) Nuclear – energy from nuclear reactions (ex - sun) Thermal – energy of heat (ex – YOU think of something that gets hot!) Electrical – energy due to the movement of electrons (electricity) (ex – YOU think of an item that uses electricity) Geothermal – energy from the earth (ex – a geyser) Radiant – energy given off by another object (ex – a space heater gives off thermal energy to the room)

Energy Changes Conservation of energy – –Energy is never created or destroyed it just changes form

Electricity and Magnetism Electric current – is the flow of electric charge in a material Electric circuit – closed path along which a current can flow
