EnergyTransformations

The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy Transformation Energy only changes from one form to another. Chemical Energy Electrical Energy Radiant (Light) Energy

The energy starts as one type (the energy it USES) The energy ends as a different type (the energy it GIVES) Electrical Energy Light Energy (Radiant)

Rubbing your hands together USES mechanical energy (movement) and GIVES thermal energy (heat) your hands start feeling warm

Eating food USES chemical energy and GIVES mechanical energy-- you now have energy to move!

A fan USES electrical energy and GIVES mechanical energy-- the blades are now moving!

Can you identify the transformation? You will need to be able to tell what energy is USED and what energy it GIVES

What energy does it USE? It uses ELECTRICAL energy, because you have to plug it in.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives off microwaves which are RADIANT energy and THERMAL energy to heat the food.

It uses light waves from the sun, which is Radiant. What energy does it USE?

What energy does it GIVE? It gives off electricity which is ELECTRICAL energy.

It uses CHEMICAL energy from the flame. What energy does it USE?

What energy does it GIVE? It gives off THERMAL (heat) and RADIANT (light)

It uses ELECTRICAL energy because it gets plugged in. What energy does it USE?

What energy does it GIVE? It gives THERMAL energy because it heats the bread.

It uses CHEMICAL and THERMAL energy from burning gasoline. What energy does it USE?

What energy does it GIVE? It gives MECHANICAL and KINETIC energy because the parts move to make the car drive around.

It uses POTENTIAL energy from being up high before a fall. What energy does it USE?

What energy does it GIVE? It gives KINETIC energy because it moves fast downhill.

It uses POTENTIAL and NUCLEAR energy from the atoms that will be split. What energy does an atomic bomb USE?

What energy does an atomic bomb GIVE? It gives RADIANT energy as radiation, and THERMAL energy as heat.
