The Struggle for North America Chapter 10, Lesson 1 & 2 Overview

Introduction From the last chapter, who were coming North America from other countries? Europeans Now we will see that Europeans are not the only ones coming to North America to claim land. Who could it be??? ________and___________

What were missions?? What was their purpose? The Spanish set up more than 100 settlements in New Mexico called_______. Missions were __________settlements where missionaries lived and worked. See a picture on page 258 of your S.S. book. The purpose of these places was to convert the Pueblo and other Native Americans to the _________ _________religion.

How did the Pueblo respond to newcomers? While many people became Catholics, they tried practicing their religion at the same time. This angered the governor and he threw 47 Pueblo religious leaders in jail. While there, Pope convinced Pueblo leaders to _________against the Spanish. Was this successful?

The French Because ______was in great demand, the French decided to build a trading post (known as Quebec) on the St. Lawrence River. __________ __________founded this 1 st permanent French settlement in North America. Later explorations by Marquette and Jolliet (1673) and La Salle (1682) led to French control of the entire Mississippi River valley. This fur became a source of wealth for France. They had many forts and trading posts throughout North America and became _________ with their Native American trading partners.

Ponder this… How did religion play an important role in the establishment of North America? How did fur shape the growth of New France? Compare the relationships that the natives had with the Spanish and the French.
