Squirrels! Rachael Smith

Appearance One of the most common squirrel species that lives in North America is the red squirrel. There are many different kinds of squirrels like ground squirrels, tree squirrels, and flying squirrels. Most squirrels can be grey, brown, red or tan colors but some are black. There are many different shapes and sizes of squirrels.

Predators and Prey A squirrel has many predators like wolfs, coyotes, foxes and many more but one of the squirrels biggest predators are people. People like to hunt squirrels for food most of the time. Some people cut down trees which destroys some of there homes and they can die. Squirrels are prey to there predators. Prey is an animal that is hunted for food and a predator is an animal that hunts other animals for food

Interactions with Other Plants and animals Squirrels are very fast rodents and very skilled mammals. Rodents are small animals and mammals are animals that produce milk to their babies. These skilled animals defend itself from predators by running from them trying to escape. They usually run to a tree because most predators can’t clime.

What do Squirrels eat? Are they herbivores, carnivores or omnivores? Squirrels are omnivores. A omnivore is an animal that eats both plants and animals. Some of squirrels most favorite kinds of foods are nuts of course! But that’s not just what they eat. Squirrels love to eat seeds, berries, mushrooms, and green vegetation. Most squirrels store food. Ground squirrels have pouches in their cheeks.

Where do squirrels live? Squirrels live in a lot of places depending on what kind of squirrel it is. Like tree squirrels live in trees but not all squirrels live in trees. Some squirrels live in underground borrows or in a old log. The only place squirrels don’t live is in Australia and Antarctica. Squirrels usually live in forest or even in your backyard.

What are the weather conditions As the seasons change so does the the weather. Like in the spring the winter snow starts to melt. In the summer the bright sun is shinning down and is toasting the animals laying in the heat. But in the fall the weather gets a little windy. The best season for a squirrel is the fall. But in the winter it gets a little chilly.

Do Squirrels hibernate or migrate? Squirrels sometimes will hibernate in the winter but some don’t but most do because in the winter it gets harder to find food. The ground gets covered in snow and rest on tree branches the food gets covered in snow and that makes it hard to find food because the cold snow is very difficult to dig through. Those squirrels that hibernate will prepare for the winter by stuffing their self with food so they don’t get hungry in the winter. If they don’t get enough food they won’t survive. Migrating is when a animal moves to another region when seasons change and to hibernate means to go into a deep sleep. Only animals can hibernate.

How are Squirrels Affected by Pollution? If their range got polluted they can not live in those conditions so they would die so you can help not just the squirrels but all kinds of other animals by being less wasteful by like turn off the sink when your not using it,also it helps safety around the house but most anywhere.

Squirrels Adaptations Adaptations means any physical feature or behavior a plant or an animal might use to help it survive. Like flying squirrels will simply sore across the sky but squirrels that can’t fly will usually make a quick get away. Some squirrels will race up a tree or jump in a under ground borrow. If a squirrel is hurt and is too slow they might just in up as a little snack.

Animal Noises Squirrels sound Animal surroundings sounds Wind

Could Squirrels live in a rainforest? Squirrels can live almost anywhere but not everywhere like the Artic but somehow squirrels can manage to survive in a rainforest. Squirrels will use their adaptations and other survival skills to help it survive but a rain forest is not a good place for a squirrel.

Fun Facts about Squirrels Did you know they’re over 230 species of squirrel? Did you know fossils of tree squirrels in North America date back 30 to 40 million years? Did you know that squirrels are not calm gentle animals, are more dangerous than you think?
