Standards Update Resource Description and Access Kevin Marsh Team Leader | Liaison, Acquisition and Description (Original Materials) State Library of Western Australia Australian Committee on Cataloguing, Incoming Representative to the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA

Outline Value of RDA US national libraries testing RDA revision process RDA implementation Training and materials Policy changes MARC21 changes and systems changes Libraries Australia RDA Toolkit and subscriptions ACOC RDA website and rdaaust Keeping in touch with RDA developments

Value of RDA Resource Description and Access or RDA is the standard that replaces the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR) is a web-based tool RDA offers Improved description of digital resources, unpublished resources and resources with multiple characteristics More guidance on the creation of authority headings Compatibility with a range of encoding schema Clearly defined data elements and improved granularity Opportunities for better catalogue displays and navigation Opportunities for more efficient data creation

US testing of RDA’s goals Goals that were met Provide a consistent, flexible and extensible framework for all types of resources and all types of content Be independent of the format, medium, or system used to store or communicate the data Goals that were mostly or partially met Be compatible with internationally established principles and standards Enable users to find, identify, select, and obtain resources appropriate to their information needs Be compatible with descriptions and access points in existing catalogues and databases Be readily adaptable to newly emerging database structures

Outcomes of the test ‘We believe that the long-term benefits of adopting RDA will be worth the short term anxieties and costs… [You may ask] if this is the time to make a dramatic change in cataloging. Our collective answer is that libraries must create linkages to all other information resources in this Web environment. We must begin now. Indefinite delay in implementation simply means a delay in our effective relationships with the broader information community.’ Extract from Statement from the Executives of the Three National Libraries Final Report and Recommendations Summary of Progress on US RDA Test Recommendations to JSC Bibliographic Transition Initiative

Systems changes Questions relating to systems changes What changes do I need to make to my local library system ahead of RDA implementation? Will I need to convert our existing records? What relationship will there be between RDA Toolkit and my library system? Will changes to catalogue displays be required? How do I keep informed? FAQ RDA implementation team

Libraries Australia Support creation and exchange of RDA data from date of implementation Update policies and system documentation Provide a pre-implementation training system Continue to support AACR records while these are supported in MARC21 Issue policy guidelines about upgrading records Investigate global changes

RDA Toolkit Released 23 June 2010 Instructions are part of an online package Instructions also available via Cataloger’s Desktop and in loose leaf print via Facet Publishing
