Clarify, Illustrate, Complicate, Extend

The Argument or Claim We begin with a simple argument or claim from our original text (source 1) like: Claim from source 1: The Beatles are the most influential band in history. And then we put it in conversation with another text’s claim

Clarify Claims (from source 2) that clarify often make claims (from source 1) more clear and easier to understand. Important Reminder: You are the one drawing connections between texts, so don’t give the credit away by saying “the author clarifies…” More correctly stated, “the author’s claim clarifies…”

A Claim that Extends & Clarifies Claim from source 1: The Beatles are the most influential band in history.  Claim from source 2: Because of numerous musicians’ stories, musical styles that have been imitated, and the popularity of so many of their songs, The Beatles’ influence cannot be matched by any other band.

Illustrate Claims (from source 2) that illustrate provide further examples and evidence in support of claims (from source 1).

A Claim the Illustrates Claim from source 1: The Beatles are the most influential band in history.  Claim from source 2: The Beatles’ songs are the most covered in the history of music, covered by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Frank Sinatra.

Complicate Claims (from source 2) that complicate claims (from source 1) introduce information that is at odds with or contradicts the information in claims from the first source.

A Claim that Complicates Claim from source 1: The Beatles are the most influential band in history.  Many more recent singers, such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Madonna have sold more music than the Beatles, and have had more #1 hits. Many bands that came before may not have sold as many songs, but did more to influence music

Extend Claims (from source 2) that extend advance or extend the claims (from source 1). They work together in the same direction, but go farther than either could go alone.

A Claim that Extends Claim from source 1: The Beatles are the most influential band in history.  Clarifying claim from source 2: Beatles gained so much popularity because they were in the right place and the right time in history.

Qualify How would we qualify the claim? Can you think of other claims that extend, complicate, challenge, or illustrate the original claim?
