Ten Best Uses for the Internet for Teaching and Learning Jacquelyn Ferguson Troy University FALL 13/ Term 1 EDU Dr. Fortune

Research Research is a huge use of the internet in the classroom. There is an abundance of information on the computer for both teachers and students. For one, teachers can research topics for the classroom. Second, the students can use the internet to research topics in the classroom. Everything in the classroom is based on research. That is what makes this one of the main uses for the internet in the classroom.

Online Learning This is a category that is becoming more and more appealing to people. There are online, K-12 programs available and there are many opportunities to take college courses online. The class we are taking now is a good example of this category. Online learning is a huge step in the availability of an education for people, regardless of a busy schedule. Much of the college work is done through Blackboard.

Social Networking/Communicating There are several social networks that are very useful for students to collaborate on classroom material. Although this is mainly popular for college students, many younger crowds are beginning to use it as well. The most popular today are Facebook and Twitter. These networks allow you to set up groups to allow certain people to keep in touch. This is useful to communicate about assignments and activities.

is a huge part of the administrative part of the classroom these days. Many now turn to other social sites to communicate, but is certainly a huge way for students, parents, and teachers to keep in touch. Two of the main choices are Yahoo Mail and Google Mail.

Tutoring There are many online tutorial sites available for students of all ages. These tutorials may cover subjects of all kinds. There are test prep sites available, such as USATestprep.

Learning Videos There are many videos available for teachers and students to enhance the learning process. For teachers, many videos contain information that will help teach a subject. For students, there are many videos that will help them learn about a topic. The most popular video streaming sites are YouTube and TeacherTube.

Educational Games There are several online games available for students. These games turn the learning process into a little fun. These games seem to help keep the students interested in the learning process and engages them into their subject.

Multimedia Learning Teachers can make a bigger impact in the classrooms by live pictures, graphics, images, documentaries, and animations. The students can look at actual pictures of things and get a better vision of what is being discussed. For instance, rare birds, volcanic eruptions, science projects, etc.

Online Assessment One of the largest used internet sources in the classroom is the online Accelerated Reader Program. This program is owned by Renaissance Place Online. This is the main reading assessment program available online for assessing student reading levels and progress. There is also a math portion of Renaissance Online. These, and many more online assessment programs, help assess and monitor progress in the student learning process.

Online Grading Systems There are many online grading services available. This has helped the teacher, student, and parent. Progress can be monitored online at the student or parent’s convenience. This alleviates the problem with lack of communication and the problem of a parent not knowing what grades their child is making in school.
