 Module 1: Note Taking Company Logo

NOTE TAKING IS A SKILL  Use a note book if you are not keen on filing.  Exam pads can be used if you will do filing on a regular basis.  Obtain your course outline and keep it in a safe place to consult if need be.  Listen actively in class.  Identify the main topic and make short notes.  Use abbreviations instead of writing the full word to safe on time: e.g., etc.  Watch out for cues and clues.  Use diagrams and sketches for making notes. Company Logo

WHAT IS A COURSE OUTLINE?  It is distributed at the beginning of the semester.  It provides a description of the course.  It stipulated course requirements and when assignments are due and tests will be written.  It provides additional course reading materials. Company Logo

HOW TO LISTEN ACTIVELY IN CLASS  Identify the main points  Make a note of it in brief  Add supporting details  Note everything of importance in class even if you don’t agree  Don’t get distracted Company Logo

IMPORTANT POINTS IN LISTENING  If the lecturer is too fast and you miss a point, don’t worry about it because then, you will miss all the points that follow, leave open spaces in notes.  Don’t try to write down everything.  Exchange notes with classmates.  See lecturer after class.  Ask lecturer to slow down.  Develop a ear for catching the clues Company Logo

HOW TO DO AN OUTLINE OF NOTES  Follow a simple method to make your outline:  Standardise it-(for example)  Main point: - supporting point-A - supporting point-B  Keep the outline clear and concise Company Logo

USE OF DIAGRAMS & SKETCHES  Diagrams, being graphic, are easier to draw and understand.  They are quicker than writing.  They can establish connections.  Copy down any diagrams given by the lecturer.  Diagrams are also easy to memorise. Company Logo

HOW TO REVIEW YOUR NOTES  It is important to review the notes you have written before you go to a class.  It is proven that if you revise and review any lecture within 24 hours you will never forget whatever you have learnt.  Review also helps you understand better the next stage in the lesson which your lecturer will deal with in the class. Company Logo

EDITING OF NOTES  Always edit as you review your notes.  Correcting the information that you have taken down when it is fresh in your memory is sensible.  Underline the key points that you have taken down.  Clarity in taking down notes will help you later when it comes to revision and study for exams.
