“Magic Rainbow” Music Visualizer The Colors of Sound Group Jamaal Merriweather Justin McDevitt Weston Bell Robert A. Hicks II Georgia Institute of Technology ECE 4007/RP1 (em2) Senior Design Project – Final Presentation May 3, 2010

Project Overview What: LED music spectral intensity visualization system. Why: Enhance musical experience for the hearing impaired. Who: Individuals with hearing disabilities. Prototype Equipment Cost: $ (add power supply) $20.52

Design Objectives/Goals Design ObjectiveProposed ImplementationActual Implementation PortabilityWeighs under 20 lbs and maximum enclosure size 20” x 20” x 6” Weight <5 lbs, Enclosure size ~ 8” x 12” x 5” Visual response to audio input LED Zones indicate intensity/power levels through LED brightness or quantity of LEDs illuminated. LED Zones indicate intensity/power levels through LED brightness. VersatilityUSB compatible; 2GB (or greater) of system memory; Simulink and drivers installed Low Power Requirements Maximum: 2 W (DAQ Digital Power Supply) Maximum: 25 W (External Power Supply) Maximum: 2 W (DAQ Digital Power Supply) Maximum: 25 W (External Power Supply) Typical: 20 W (Total)

Demonstration Plan Zone Isolation: Playback of 8.mp3 files containing a single frequency in the center of each zone’s bandwidth. Portability: Demonstrate compliance with weight and size specifications. Playback of.mp3 songs from various genres to illustrate appropriate response. (Classical, Rock, Techno, etc…) Demonstrate compatibility with microphone input. Power Requirements: Measure power consumption of LED zones (less than 25 W).

Problems & Issues Real Time vs. Simulation Time. Post-FFT Sampling & Form Conversion Timing. DAQ recognition in Simulink. DAQ Power Supply Malfunction. Brightness and low viewing angle of LEDs. Optimal Circuit layout for Soldiered LED zones (size constraint).

Future Work Use SPI with Simulink to indicate frequency band intensity through number of LEDs lit. Explore additional sensory outputs such as vibration. Expand user friendliness by designing GUI. Incorporate higher-level feature extraction (timbre, mood, etc). Adapt design for standalone use (for example, with IPod) by performing signal processing on a microcontroller.
