Presentation transcript:

We can find other forms of apocalyptic passages in the Bible such as in Daniel or Ezekiel, but the book of Revelation has the most apocalyptic material in the Bible Apocalyptic means “revealing the hidden” We find this genre outside the Bible too. In today’s culture, it is similar to many of the books and movies we see today.

What exactly does the apocalyptic genre look like? 1.It claims to reveal hidden knowledge 2.The language is strange and mysterious. It describes events and pictures that are difficult to understand. Symbolism is heavily relied upon. 3.A major theme is the final victory of God over evil 4.It has a focus on future events. In the Bible, while it does not envision the end of the cosmos, it does envision the end of evil and suffering and the visible reign of God on earth.

The Book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John, somewhere between A.D John was an old man, and he was living in exile on the island of Patmos. One Sunday, John is praying, and God gives a vision to him. John is commanded to write down what he has seen. The main theme of the book is to provide a vision of God’s ultimate purpose for humanity. God is the sovereign over human history. Jesus Christ will conquer Satan and save humanity. There will be a new heaven and a new earth.
