Session Developing others

Session 1.3.4: Objectives Learning objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Apply coaching techniques to help another person work through a management or leadership challenge Describe their role as a coach to Core Skills participants and the method they will follow

Coaching What is coaching?

Coaching Coaching is a short-term intervention, aimed at performance improvement or developing a particular competence. It enables staff members to be more successful by: Setting and reaching better goals Focusing on actions and priorities Being challenged to accomplish more Making use of the feedback and techniques in the coaching relationship to achieve success

Coaching in humanitarian response Coaching can help staff in stressful times to generate new options and new ideas It can be done with individuals and teams The coach helps the ‘learner’ to think through their options Key skills – listening, questioning and feedback

The GROW coaching model Goal: What would you like to achieve from this session? Is that realistic? Reality: What is happening at the moment? How do you know that is accurate? Options: What could you do to change the situation? What approach/actions have you seen used, or used yourself, in similar circumstances? Wrap Up: What are the next steps? Precisely when will you take them? What might get in the way? What support do you need?
