Why Apples & Honey on Rosh Hashana?

Why do we eat apples and honey in the first place? On Rosh Hashana we are celebrating the new year. We pray for a sweet new year ahead, so we eat sweet foods in the hopes of making our year sweet.

Why specifically apples? According to Midrash, Gan Eden smelled like an apple orchard. Eating apples reminds us of Gan Eden.

In Shir Hashirim, King Shlomo uses images of being under an apple tree to awaken G-d’s love. On Rosh Hashana we hope to awaken G-d’s love for us so that we have a good year ahead.

Why Apples? There is a practical reason for eating apples too. The tradition arose is an Ashkenazic tradition that arose in Europe. Apples are ripe during this season in Europe.

Did you know there are so many different kinds of apples?

And even more…
