Planes, Position and Movement

Anatomical Position Provides common reference point Standing position Facing forward Arms out Palms facing forward Toes point forward

What is a plane?

Words to know Plane – imaginary line that divides body into smaller sections

Median/Sagittal plane – divides body into equal left & right halves

Frontal/coronal plane – divides body into front and back parts

Horizontal/transverse plane – divides the body into upper and lower parts

Positions on human body Usually used in pairs or opposites

Anterior vs. Posterior Anterior closer to the front of body, posterior is closer to the _______? Superior vs. Inferior Superior is closer to the head, inferior is closer to the ________? Proximal vs. Distal Proximal is closer to the body, distal is ______ from the body.

Medial vs. Lateral Medial is closer to the middle of the body, lateral is ________ from the middle body. Superficial vs. Deep Superficial is closer to the surface of the skin, deep is __________ from the surface of the skin.
