The NQT Induction Period

PGCE, NQT and beyond…  NQT – the induction year begins when you have gained QTS.  Induction year – develops your “tool-kit” through personalised CPD and support and provides further evidence of your ability to meet the standards.  Secondary: After successful completion of the induction “year” (3 full school terms) QTS is confirmed. Qualified to teach  FE/Post compulsory: Qualified to teach in post- compulsory education. Will achieve QTLS

The Induction Year During the year, all NQTs should receive structured support from induction tutors. This will include:  Being registered with HCC (Secondary NQTs)  Regular meetings to monitor progress(written half termly reviews which are submitted to the LA are essential for secondary trained NQTs)  Lesson observations  Training  For secondary trained NQTs, a school-based teaching period is required (10 days)

The Induction Year As NQTs you should:  Receive a 10 per cent reduction in your teaching timetable to give you time to develop your teaching skills away from the classroom  Reflect on and record evidence of your progress (A report on progress against the Induction standards is completed and sent to HCC at the end of each term)  Take responsibility for your own professional development, but ensure you ask for help.

Activity Q1 what's working really well? Highlights so far Q2 what were you least prepared for? What's been hardest to cope with? Q3 most useful piece of advice received. What advice would you give an NQT starting next September? Q4 how have your expectations differed from the reality of working in a college (including unexpected good bits!)

The Induction Year Making the most of it….  Support each other (within your college and the network)  Link up with ex-NQTs  Use the training opportunities provided e.g. SLCs, Curriculum Support Groups, exam boards, peer observation  Beware the support that makes you feel even more exhausted!  Prioritise – you will not achieve everything  Try not to be over-critical!  Focus on moving forward

Your Feedback How could support in colleges for NQTs be improved? What would you like to cover this year in the NQT development days?
