Fifth Grade Measurement: Measuring Perimeter Tips: -Teachers, please read through the whole presentation prior to the activity. -Each activity is meant to be used in addition to your classroom teaching. -Each activity includes a journal component. Objectives: TSW determine the appropriate method to find the perimeter of a figure.

Perimeter: The distance around a figure. Methods of finding Perimeter: Square - each side is the same in a square - 4 times the length of 1 side. Rectangle - opposite sides are equal - 2 times the length of 1 side + 2 times the length of the other side. Polygons - each side may or may not be the same - add all the sides together. <--- To Teacher Page

Choose the appropriate method to find the perimeter of each of these figures. Figure A - a square with 1 side that measures 10 cm. A.A. Figure B - a rectangle with a length of 15 cm. and a height of 5 cm. B. Record your answers--->

A.A. B. Figure A is a square so all of its sides are the same. You would take 10 cm. times 4 to equal the perimeter. 10 X 4 = 40 cm. Figure B is a rectangle so it has equal opposite sides. You would take 15 cm. times 2 plus 5 cm. times 2 to equal perimeter. (15 X 2) + (5 X 2) = 40 cm. Answers: More practice --->

Find the perimeter for each of these figures. Explain how & why you chose this method. A. B. C. Figure A. is an octagon with one side that measures 5 cm. Figure B is a polygon with all its sides labeled. 8 cm. 6 cm. Figure C. is a rectangle that measures 10 cm. in length and 8 cm. in height. Answers on the next slide --->

Answers: your answers A. B. C. 8 cm. 6 cm. Figure A.: 5 X 8 = 40 cm. Figure B.: = 36 cm. Figure C.: (10 X 2) + (8 X 2) = 36 cm.
