All Quiet on the Western Front Listen to the audio recording of chapter 3 and then answer the following questions in your English notebook. DON’T FORGET, YOUR PACKET IS DUE IN 18 DAYS!

What is that element? Katczinsky and Kropp discuss the how they feel the war should be fought. Even though they are obviously joking, there is one serious element they both have in their ideas. What is that element? Why does Tjaden in particular hate Himmelstoss? “He finds everything-if it is cold, a small stove and wood, hay and straw, a table and chairs- but above all food. It is uncanny; one would think he conjured it out of the air. His masterpiece was four boxes of lobsters.” Who is the “he” described in the passage? Provide three other pieces of information regarding this character. PACKET QUESTIONS 1 AND 2 SHOULD BE COMPLETE!

Listen to the audio recording of chapter 4 and complete the following questions and activity in your English notebook. DON’T FORGET, YOUR PACKET IS DUE IN 17 DAYS! In the picture: WWI Lorrie

Simile: two unlike things are explicitly compared. Metaphor: a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God.” Personification: giving inanimate objects human characteristics.

How does Remarque specifically illustrate the truth of Paul’s statement that, “To no man does the earth mean so much as to the soldier”? In what setting does the heavy shelling of chapter 4 take place? What is ironic about this setting? List several signs which indicate to the soldiers that there will be heavy fighting soon. PACKET QUESTION NUMBER 3 SHOULD BE COMPLETE!

Image: refers to something that can be perceived by the senses. Symbol/symbolism: an object, place, character, or action that stands for something else.

Paul’s teacher Kantorek persuades his students to join the army by telling them that they will be fighting for the glory of the fatherland. Many military recruiting posters at the time did the same. Recruiting posters are a form of propaganda because they were designed to influence public opinion on social and political issues. Create a military recruiting poster aimed at young people. Select a strong visual image for your poster and a complimentary slogan or message.

DON’T FORGET, YOUR PACKET IS DUE IN --- DAYS! Quick Write: In your notebook, describe what human nature is?

Question of the Day: What does this chapter teach us about trench warfare? Assignment: Work on your trench project after reading this chapter. QUESTION NUMBER 4 IN YOUR PACKET SHOULD BE COMPLETED! ONLY A FEW DAYS REMAINING!!

Chapter 7 *see Google map Daniel Radcliffe article Why do you suppose Paul is reluctant to share his front experiences with his family and with local civilians? Why does Paul lie to Kemmerich’s mother? The Major who publicly humiliates Paul reminds you of what other two pompous, ridiculous, and power-hungry authority figures?
