8 TH GRADE SCIENCE Properties of Sound Waves

Motion of waves Compression Waves Compression Waves – Waves that move particles of a medium “parallel”, disturb the medium back and forth. (SOUND) Energy

Motion of waves Transverse Wave Transverse Wave – Waves that move the medium at “right angles”. Disturb the medium up & down or left & right. The medium Medium being disturbed by the energy Direction of energy flow

Type of Waves Surface Waves Surface Waves – Combinations of transverse & longitudinal waves, causing a circular motion of particles. This occurs between 2 mediums (water & air).

Parts of Compression waves Compression Waves

Parts of a Transverse Wave Frequency = # of wavelengths per 1 sec. (Hz) Wavelengt h (λ) amplitude Crest Trough Medium

Amplitude – maximum displacement of the medium as energy passes.

Crest & Trough - The section of the wave that rises above the undisturbed medium is called the crest. The section below is the trough.

Wavelength (λ) - The distance between any 2 identical points of different waves.

Frequency How many wavelengths occur per second.  Hertz (Hz)
