Geometric designs

The beginning of effigy The Mimbres figurative and geometric styles.

Early vessels were very open and the decorations covered the inside surfaces of the ceramics.

Artists began closing in the openings and making vessels taller. Thus, the decorations began to embellish the outside of the pots rather than the inside.

Painting was combined with sculptural additions, to create early effigy vessels. Costa Rica-Jaguar vessel

Some effigy vessels transformed from being utilitarian to almost completely artistic inventions. Various artworks by more contemporary Native American potters and ceramicists show experimentation from the abstract geometric painting to representational figures- from open bowl shapes to very closed bottle forms.
