JCOMMOPS vision definition JCOMMOPS occupies a unique place as the focal point for the practical co-ordination of the in-situ ocean observing system defined by JCOMM. Its role consists of the following core objectives: to assist in the implementation and deployment of the observing networks through close interaction with programme managers and platform operators, and through Capacity Development and outreach; to assist in establishing, maintaining and verifying mechanisms for the timely exchange of data and metadata, including the facilitation of quality control and archival functions; to develop the consistent set of tools needed to monitor the status of the observing system and its attendant data and metadata distribution, so as to identify action areas and improve the overall effectiveness and development of the system.

The supplier/consumer relationship supplier consumer data & metadata

The supplier/consumer relationship supplier consumer data & metadata FEEDBACK: quality quantity timeliness JCOMMOPS acts as a ‘broker’ between supplier and consumer

Quality feedback tools

Quality trend over 10 years: drifter SLP

Databuoy network: coverage

Databuoy network

Databuoy network: drifter GTS delays

Databuoy network

Databuoy network: AOML view

One output - surface current climatology Will increasingly be used for network design

AOML drifter prediction tool

Databuoy network: OSMC view

Databuoy network: SAILWX.INFO - only simple way for 3 rd party operator to view GTS data!

Monitoring: conclusion Current arrangements: –Too inconsistent to be used easily as a management tool –Do not give reliable status by platform, or by ECV –Probably do not represent best use of combined resources Further discussion and action underway within JCOMM OPA

Future JCOMM contributions to WIGOS Closer interaction with satellite community –Pilot projects for in situ surface vector winds / 2D wave spectra / HRSST Roll-out of climate-quality observations –Ocean heat content and sea-level rise Deep Argo Sub-sea cables (ITU/IOC/WMO JTF): dual use for tsunami warning Improved sea-level network: dual use for tsunami warning Implementation of Satcom Forum Importance of GRAs Biogeochemical observations Composite network design –OSSEs –Better metrics of system performance
