2 Corinthians 9:13 General or Limited Benevolence on the part of the church?

Who Does “All” Refer To? “Men” is an interpolation –interpolation: a word which is supplied by the translators because it is supposedly understood. It is supplied in the interest of clarity, but it has no corresponding word in the manuscript. –Grammatically - nothing that requires the translator to supply the word “men” –Contextually there is much to indicate “men” should not be supplied

Who Does “All” Refer To? Any masculine plural pronoun could be supplied –The gender and number of “all” is masculine and plural –“men” is masculine and plural –Could also be more restrictive words like “saints,” “brethren,” “Christians,” “disciples,” all masculine plural pronouns

Who Does “All” Refer To? “All”: Greek “pantas” –“all of every kind, everything.” –No inherent reference to humans –(Ep.4:11-13) “… till we all come to the unity of the faith” –(Ga.2:14) “I said to Peter before them all” –(1Ti.5:20) “Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all”

Who Does “All” Refer To? Who is represented by “them”? –If saints in general then “all” would be men who are not saints –“Them” = the poor among the saints in Jerusalem (Ro.15:26,31) (1Co.16:3) –“All” saints other than the poor in Jerusalem –Parallel: (Mt.3:5)

Who Does “All” Refer To? (Matthew 3:5) Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, (KJV)

Who Does “All” Refer To? Who is represented by “them”? –If saints in general then “all” would be men who are not saints –“Them” = the poor among the saints in Jerusalem (Ro.15:26,31) (1Co.16:3) –“All” saints other than the poor in Jerusalem –Parallel: (Mt.3:5) –Context must determine the reference of “all”

“All” Cannot Mean “All Men Generally” Because... The Collection Was Specified For Saints –Instructions To The Corinthians (1Co.16:1) –Instructions To the Romans (Ro.15:25-26) –The context (2Co.8:4 ; 9:1,12) The Collection Was… –Raised for the saints (1Co.16:1) –Sent to the saints (Ro.15:25) –Received by the saints (Ro.15:26) –Supplied the wants of the saints (2Co.9:12)

The Allegation Paul portrayed the collection as one for saints while he collected it… Then after collected, he declared that it was for alien sinners also Impugns the sensibility and honesty of Paul

“All” Cannot Mean “All Men Generally” Because... The Economic Purpose Assigned To The Collection –To provide for the physical needs of the poor saints (Ro.15:25-27) (2Co.8:13-15 ; 9:12) –To bring about equality (2Co.8:13-15)

“All” Cannot Mean “All Men Generally” Because... The Religious Purpose Of This Collection –To aid in cementing Jew - Gentile relations within the church –The fruits of this collection Thanksgiving to God (v.12) Glorification of God (v.13) Prayer (v.14) Recipients would long for the givers (v.14)

“All” Cannot Mean “All Men Generally” Because... The Religious Purpose Of This Collection –It was a spiritual debt that the Gentiles owed the Jews Rom.15:27 Acts 11:20-22 Acts 15:7,12
