Cloning Animals

Cloning animals Farmers would like to clone animals to reproduce exactly desired characteristics like meat, milk, wool, etc. Animals, especially mammals are very difficult to clone because the cells of adults are specialised. The first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult diploid cell was a sheep called “Dolly” in 1996.

Cloning mammals using a diploid nucleus Cloning Dolly from Starr Cloning Dolly from DLC

Adult cell cloning 1. Removing egg nucleus2. Injecting adult cell 3. Injecting adult cell4. Ready for fusion Blunt pipette Egg cell Sucking pipette nucleus Adult cell enucleationtransfer

In pairs, use the above slide to discuss the stages in the production of cloned mammals. You may be asked to present (without the use of notes) the stages in the production of cloned mammals, illustrated using Dolly the sheep. Now study the next slide.

Cloning mammals using a diploid nucleus

Now, let’s see what you have learned… Describe the stages in the production of cloned animals. Listen to each presentation Act as “critical friends” to provide feedback

Cloning animals 1.Identify which cells are diploid or haploid. 2.Which animals will be genetically identical? 3.Why is it important to remove the nucleus of the egg cell from animal B?

Put in now or later with GM? Evaluate the potential for using cloned transgenic animals, for example to produce commercial quantities of human antibodies or organs for transplantation. The Story of Dolly the Sheep (includes stem cells) - The New York Times (13.5 minutes)

Adult cell cloning One animal can be cloned many times, even after it’s died Animals could be saved from extinction Genetically modified animal could be cloned Very difficult – low success rate Adult with known characteristics is cloned Evaluate the cloning of animals
