Sue Vest, CTR; Deb Smith, CTR; Louanne Currence, RHIT, CTR; Jeannette Jackson-Thompson, MSPH, PhD Missouri Cancer Registry, University of Missouri-Columbia Project Objective: Increase the knowledge of hospital-based registrars and other health professionals regarding the inner workings of a central registry Hospital-based registrars are frequently only vaguely aware of a central registry’s activities and processes. They have a general understanding of the skills required to be successful in a central registry but little understanding of the complexity of central registry operations. The Missouri Cancer Registry has developed a hands-on workshop as a means to further the knowledge of hospital-based registrars and other health professionals regarding the inner workings of a central registry. Methods: Missouri Cancer Registry staff developed a hands-on workshop to give hospital-based staff the opportunity to view cases and data from a central registry “point of view.” Actual de-identified cases were used to illustrate the how, when, why and what of data review. Pre-test and post-test (evaluation) questionnaires were developed to assist the central registry in making any necessary changes to the presentation or to internal procedures. Expected Outcome: Hospital-based registrars will be better able to understand how the data they submit is reviewed, how text (or lack of text) affects data review, why timely, accurate and complete data are important, skills required and utilized by central registry staff and how hospital and central registry staff can work together for better data. MCR Staff 1) The presentation needs to be 2 hours or longer. 2) Material must be presented in a simplified format. 3) Examples need to be on screen as part of the PowerPoint presentation. 4) Experienced hospital registrars have a general awareness of central registry operations but not of the complexity of operations.
