Presentation transcript:

Are you an undergraduate interested in a seismological research project for the summer of 2009? EAR

If so, consider applying for an IRIS Summer Undergraduate Internship. EAR Applications available online beginning November 1, 2008

If accepted you will have the opportunity to… Conduct investigations with leading researchers at IRIS institutions. Gain experience with state-of-the-art geophysical equipment, data and data analysis techniques. Engage in the design and implementation of scientific investigations, help prepare publication of results, and defend scientific arguments. EAR

A typical summer experience... begins with a week-long orientation at New Mexico Tech EAR

5 Classroom sessions introduce interns to topics including: – history and theory of seismology, – earthquakes and earth structure, – geophysical inverse theory, – general reflection and refraction theory, and – seismological data collection and seismic processing. Lab sessions – basics of the UNIX operating system, – Other computer programs (e.g. MatLab, GMT and ProMax), and – Exposure to research-grade field equipment EAR Orientation week

6 Discussions of career and other long-range professional issues – graduate student life, – strategies and opportunities to fund graduate education, and – a career panel (industry, academia and government labs) Fun (It isn’t all work!) – Fieldwork – Hikes/field trips to local geologic structures – Bonfire – Movie night a pool – Cultural exposure (museum and local historian ) EAR Orientation week

Heading to the host institution for research EAR

8 Summer Research 2008 Intern Placements Potential mentor pool includes many of the most prestigious academic institutions and nearly every prominent academic seismologist in the US.

9 Summer Research Research projects may involve –deployment of seismic instruments (within the US or internationally), and –analyses of seismic data Projects will provide interns with ample opportunities to: – develop an understanding of scientific inquiry, including designing and conducting scientific investigations and defending scientific arguments, – gather, manage, and convey information, using various skills, strategies, resources, and – learn, use, and evaluate technologies for the collection and study of geophysical data, while working with a researcher at an IRIS institution.

Your summer culminates as you present your research at a professional meeting EAR

11 Bring closure to research experience – 99% of interns present at the American Geophysical Union meeting (in San Francisco) – ~10% of interns present oral sessions – Network at the annual IRIS Intern Reunion – Learn about exciting new research – Meet potential graduate advisors – Learn about Earth Science as a career option

As an IRIS Intern you will receive A weekly stipend ($550/week for weeks). Funding for travel to and from the orientation, the home institution of your research host, and any field work. Assistance securing housing at the host institution Funding to present your results at a professional meeting EAR

For more information, or to apply to the program please visit us on the web or contact us via . Experience or coursework in seismology or geophysics is not a requirement for successful candidates. Michael Hubenthal - Deadline to apply is February 1, 2009 EAR
