STRUCTURES & STRATEGIES LECTURE 2

FORMATIONS Strengths and weaknesses Roles and Responsibilities Proficiency Width Depth Mobility The ability to cover and respond to opponents attacks.

Defensive Position Back to basket Basket side of opponent Pressure ball carrier Provide cover Delay an attack

DEFENCE ½ Court Man-Man (pick up at halfway line) Zone Defence (cover an area of the court)

Zone Defences Box + 1 Triangle + 2 Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats

2-1-2 Good Court coverage Rebound triangle Forces outside shots Provides Width and Depth Opportunity for ‘Fast Break’

2-3 Strong Rebound Triangle Width to avoid backdoor play Forces outside shooting Weak at the front (free throw)

Zone Defence Fails If… Opponents are strong outside shooters. Defence are pulled out of position ie follow man or ball. Players are not mobile in providing cover. You have one poor defender the whole structure can breakdown.

Turning Defence into Attack – TRANSITION Win ball -Intercept -Steal -Force errors -Rebound

Fast Break? Win Ball Outlet Pass Drive centre of court Fill the lanes (numbers up) Wide players V-cut to basket Ball carrier has options Lay-up to score
