Augmented Sorting of Recovered Wood Waste Using Stain and X-Ray Technologies Recently Awarded by the FDEP Innovative Recycling Grants Program to the Town of Medley

Objectives Evaluate two innovative technologies for identifying and removing CCA-treated wood within recovered wood waste. PAN Indicator Stain X-ray Technology (hand-held units)

Tasks Sort 10 tons (minimum) of dimensional C&D waste wood using visual methods, PAN stain and XRF unit Document speed and costs. Picking Line Sorts No augmentation With stain With XRF Documentation Phase I Phase II

Project Collaborators Host Facility

Why Are New Methods Needed for Sorting?

Sorting Technologies (Previous Work) Chemical Stains Arsenic Test Kit Laser (LIBS) X-ray (XRF) Time consuming but inexpensive For a few samples Suited for on-line applications

Chemical Stains Low Capital Cost, Labor Intensive Chemical stains  Chrome Azurol  PAN Indicator**  Rubeanic Acid UntreatedTreated Stains Are Not Arsenic Specific

On-Line Technologies (Previous Work in Sarasota County) Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) X-Ray Flourescence Spectroscopy (XRF)

DETECTORS laser x-ray

X-Ray Fluorescence Technology

Incident X-ray from the analyzer strikes an electron occupying the lowest shell Electron is ejected An upper-shell electron drops down to fill the vacancy X-ray characteristic to this elements’ energy is emitted Incident X-Ray Ejected e- Emitted X-Ray Transitioned e- Nucleus Theory of X-Ray Fluorescence
