Brief psychotic disorder

period of psychosis whose duration is generally shorter, non re-occurring, and not better accounted for by another condition.psychosis The disorder is characterized by a sudden onset of psychotic symptoms, which may include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior, or catatonic behavior. The symptoms must not be better accounted for by schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder or mania in bipolar disorder. They must also not be caused by a drug (such as amphetamines) or medical condition (such as a brain tumor).delusions hallucinations catatonicschizophreniaschizoaffective disorder delusional disorderbipolar disorder amphetaminesbrain tumor

Brief psychotic disorder Symptoms generally last at least a day, but not more than a month, and there is an eventual return to full baseline functioning. It may occur in response to a significant stressor in a person's life, or in other situations where a stressor is not apparent, including 4 weeks postpartum. In diagnosis, a careful distinction is considered for culturally appropriate behaviors, such as religious beliefs and activities. It is believed to be connected to or synonymous with a variety of culture-specific phenomena such as yak, latah, koro, amok, and whitiligo.[1]stressor4 weeks postpartum culture-specific phenomenalatah koroamok[1]

Brief psychotic disorder The sufferer must have one of the following symptoms: delusions, hallucinations, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, or disorganized speech. Diagnostic Criteria for Brief Psychotic Disorder Presence of one (or more) of the following symptoms:symptoms –delusions –hallucinations –disorganized speech (e.g., frequent derailment or incoherence) –grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior Note: Do not include a symptom if it is a culturally sanctioned response pattern.

Brief psychotic disorder Duration of an episode of the disturbance is at least 1 day but less than 1 month, with eventual full return to premorbid level of functioning. The disturbance is not better accounted for by a Mood Disorder With Psychotic Features, Schizoaffective Disorder, or Schizophrenia and is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition. Mood Disorder A brief psychotic episode is time limited, lasting at least a day, but less than a month. As a rule, the quicker the onset, the faster the recovery.
