Effective & Equitable Access to Technology: The Where and Why of Placement By Bob Marley 4 th Grade Teacher ACS

Placement: Where & Why 4 Desktop PC’s: Placement These are placed in a corner of the classroom so that the back of the computers are facing the wall. Allow for 5-6 inches space between the wall and the back of the computer or monitor, whichever protrudes more closely towards the wall.

Placement: Where & Why 4 Desktop PC’s: Connectivity These are placed in the corner of the room where there is an Ethernet cord. In the case that there is only 1 Ethernet cable, use a splitter. If there are no Ethernet cables in the classroom, the computers will need to have a wireless network USB adapter device so that they can tap into the school’s wireless network.

Placement: Where & Why 4 Desktop PC’s: Physical Set-up The computers and monitors are placed on a table that measures 8 ft. X 3ft. Each computer remains hooked up to a set of noise canceling headphones that encompass the ear. Sanitary wipes remain at the computer table at all times. These are to used to thoroughly wipe down the entire set of headphones each time a student leaves the desktop station.

Placement: Where & Why 4 Desktop PC’s: Partition The diagram below shows how an L- shaped partition separates the computer station from the rest of the classroom. partition

Placement: Where & Why 4 Desktop PC’s: Printing All classroom computers as well as students laptops, are configured to print documents in the computer storage room (wirelessly). computerstorage roomcomputerstorage room classroom

Placement: Where & Why SmartCart (projection device): Placement Since the SmartCart will be used almost every school day, it has a permanent spot from where it can project images directly onto the whiteboard or a pull-down projection screen that is affixed to the wall directly over the whiteboard. If the SmartCart is not close enough to an electrical outlet, an extension cord is stapled to the classroom floor and covered by an area rug.

Placement: Where & Why Alphasmart (word processing device): Information The AlphaSmart is a brand of portable, battery powered, word-processing keyboards manufactured by NEO Direct, Inc. (formerly AlphaSmart, Inc.), currently owned by Renaissance Learning, Inc.

Placement: Where & Why Alphasmart (word processing device): Placement The AlphaSmart devices will be placed in rectangular bench that stores items under the seating area. 4-5 of these devices should be kept in inventory at all times. The bench has a circular hole cut through the back that enables an electrical cord to go into the bench, connected to an outlet strip. The devices will remain plugged in when not in use so that the batteries remain charged. The bench storage enables easy access for students and lessons the chances of an injury when taking the devices out and putting them away.
