How to locate the North Star Geography How to locate the North Star

Determining North Without a Compass Source: “How to find the North Star.” Survival Topics. 26 Aug. 2008. <http://www.survivaltopics.com/survival/how-to-find-the-north-star/>

Constellation - Constellation - a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure. Modern astronomers divide the sky into eighty-eight constellations with defined boundaries Erroneously - traces back to the Latin word errare, meaning “to stray, err.” If something's done erroneously, you can think of it as straying from the right path and ending up going in the wrong direction. Celestial - positioned in or relating to the sky, or outer space as observed in astronomy.

Lodestar- a star that is used to guide the course of a ship, especially Polaris. Asterisms - a prominent pattern or group of stars, typically having a popular name but smaller than a constellation. Declination - the angular distance of a point north or south of the celestial equator. Polestar - another term for Polaris. Polaris - A star located at the end of the handle of the Little Dipper, in the constellation Ursa Minor, approximately 408 light years from Earth, and almost at the north celestial pole. Also called North Star, polar star, polestar.

Facts you thought you knew… It’s the brightest stars in the sky. It’s one of the biggest star in the sky. It’s part of the big dipper. Where did you learn these facts? They are all UNTRUE!

The REAL Facts. The brightest star in the sky is Sirius. Sirius is 22 times brighter than the North Star

The REAL Facts. The North Star is named Polaris. It is found in the LITTLE Dipper. The BIG Dipper is more easily visible and can be used to locate the Little Dipper.

Directions First, find the Big Dipper.  Draw an straight line between the two stars of the Big Dipper as shown, toward the Little Dipper. The North Star is located at the end of the handle of the Little Dipper. The Polestar is the brightest of the Little Dipper stars.
