Write Title: “What is a Tide?” Tides are the periodic rise and fall of large bodies of water. Tides are caused by a gravitational interaction between the Moon, the Earth & the Sun.

Write Title: “1. How is the Moon involved?” The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon. Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side.)  Since the Earth is rotating while this is happening, two tides occur each day.

Answers When the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned in a straight line, we have Spring Tides. When the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned to form a right angle, we have Neap Tides.

The sun’s role The sun also plays a major role, affecting the size and position of the two tidal bulges. The interaction of the forces generated by the moon and the sun can be quite complex. As this is an introduction to the subject of tides and water levels we will focus most of our attention on the effects of the stronger celestial influence, the moon.

What is a Spring Tide? It has NOTHING to do with the season of Spring. During Full or New moon phases the gravitational pull of the moon and the Sun are combined. During Spring Tides, high tides are higher than normal and low tides are lower than normal, thus resulting in a large tidal range. Spring Tides occur during the moon phases of being New and Full.

What are Neap Tides? During Neap tides, water levels at high tides are lower than normal and low tides are higher than normal. Neap Tides occur during the moon phases of 1 st and 3 rd quarter. Neap tides result in a very low tidal range.

What is a Tidal Range? The vertical distance between water levels from a time of high tide to low tide. The typical tidal range in the open ocean is about 0.6 meters (2 feet). As you get closer to the coast, however, this range gets much greater. Coastal tidal ranges vary globally and can differ anywhere from 1.8 meters to 3 meters (6–10 feet). The tides in Canada's Bay of Fundy are the most extreme in the world because of the unique shape of the bay. The Bay of Fundy between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Canada experiences the world's greatest tidal range of 50 feet (15.25 meters). There are two high tides and low tides each day.

Tides and Energy Tides can also create a way of producing electricity through the use of turbines. The ebb and flow of the tides can be used to turn a turbine, or it can be used to push air through a pipe, which then turns a turbine. Large lock gates, like the ones used on canals, allow ships to pass.

Why Study Tides? Some creatures base their feeding or reproductive schedules on the tidal cycle. Planning the development of coastal cities like roadways and buildings. In some places it generates power.
