Tides

What are tides? Tides are the regular rise and fall of ocean surfaces caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and, to a lesser degree, the sun.

Bay of Fundy - Low and High Tide

What is a tidal bulge? The Moon’s gravitational pull is strongest on the ocean surface nearest the Moon. A tidal bulge is formed when water in this area is pulled toward the moon. Water covering the middle region is pulled downward and flows out, increasing the size of the bulges. A location on Earth’s surface will experience a high tide when it rotates into one of the tidal bulges.

What are Spring Tides? Spring tides are especially strong tides that occur during the full moon and the new moon, when the Earth, Sun, and Moon are aligned. Their combined gravitational forces all contribute in causing unusually high and low tides.

What are Neap Tides? Neap tides are tides that occur just after the first or third quarters of the moon, when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to each other with respect to the Earth. The gravity of the Sun competes with the gravity of the Moon. During this time, the difference between high and low tides is smaller and the tides are weak.
