DO NOW : Does everyone procrastinate sometimes? Why or why not? For those students who do not procrastinate (as a rule), was there a turning point that caused you to stop procrastinating. Explain. What clues can help you recognize procrastination? When might procrastination become a problem? Does procrastination cause problems in other areas of our lives? Explain. How does procrastination work against us?

Why can’t we just ‘do it later’??? PROCASTINATION

WHAT IS PROCRASTINATION? The action of delaying or postponing something.

UNDERSTANDING PROCRASTINATION The Procrastination Process – Thoughts – Emotions/Feelings – Actions/Behaviors Motivation & Human Nature Mood & Other Issues

STYLES OF PROCRASTINATION – DO YOU RECOGNIZE YOURSELF? The Perfectionist – Hesitant to start or finish a project unless confident of doing it perfectly. The Dreamer – Has great ideas but doesn’t want to do the work to fulfill them. The Worrier – Preoccupied with security and minimizing risk, avoids challenges or significant change. The Defier – Eager to rebel or be different, reacts against others rather than determining own course. The Crisis-Maker – Waits to the last minute then needs adrenaline boost to barely make deadlines The Overdoer – Takes on too many tasks to get them all done reasonably on time.

DO NOW: How can you stop procrastinating? How does procrastination affect study skills? Why is important to develop effective study skills?

GET ORGANIZED: Your Future Depends on It

TEN TIPS TO HELP YOU ORGANIZE YOUR TIME Define goals. Make a list of priorities and rank them in order of importance. Make yourself a priority—schedule time to relax and get a good night’s sleep! Keep your priorities realistic; let others—like teachers and guidance counselors—help. Keep time logs to help you reschedule better.

TEN TIPS TO HELP YOU ORGANIZE YOUR TIME CONT. Review your lists, calendars, and logs every day. Make a back up plan to avoid letting crises upset your scheduling. Use all your time—travel time, waiting time—for thinking out problems and jotting down ideas. Remember that it’s ok to say “no” to some commitments! Communicate your schedule to your friends, so that they don’t call and interrupt you when you’re studying.

ADJUST YOUR ATTITUDE AND HABITS TO AVOID WASTING TIME. Realize that you control how you spend your resource of time. Goals take time to consider, time to develop, and planning to achieve. When you learn and practice new behaviors to achieve your goals, you are developing your future.

SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO SCHEDULE TIME EFFECTIVELY. WITH PRACTICE, YOU CAN, TOO!

Remember, yesterday is gone, tomorrow is not yet here. Any task that you perform or do not perform today will affect your tomorrows in some way. So if you want to take charge of your life, take charge of your time.
