Animals and plants Different animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Click on each layer to meet its inhabitants. Emergent layer Canopy Understory Forest Floor

Emergent Layer Tall trees as high as 200 feet make up this layer. Sunlight is plentiful here. Animals found in the emergent layer are eagles, monkeys, bats and butterflies.

Canopy This is the Primary Layer of the rainforest and creates a roof over the other layers. Lots of animals live here as there is plenty of food. These include snakes, toucans and tree frogs

Understory Not much sunlight gets to this layer, which is why the plants have large leaves. Animals which live here are red eyed tree frogs, snakes and leopards. There are also lots of insects.

Forest Floor Not many plants live here as it is very dark. Giant anteaters live here, as well as elephants, tigers, leopards and gorillas, depending on the country.

African Rainforest This is the second largest rainforest. It has areas of high cloud forest, swamps and flooded forests. It is also home to many plants and animals not found in any other rainforest South Asia AustralasiaAmazon Central America

Southern Asian Rainforest This rainforest stretches from Burma to India and from Java to Borneo. It has the largest area of mangrove forests in the world. The climate is hot and humid all year round AustralasiaAmazon Central America Africa

The Amazon is home to a huge variety of the Earth’s plants and animals. 1/5 of the world’s plants and 1/10 of the world’s mammals live there. South Asia Australasia Central America Africa
