Approaching BIP Programming through a Social Change Lens Hilda Gutierrez - TCFV Daisy Lopez and Claudia Cerda – Friendship of Women, Inc.

Why Integrate Prevention in to BIP work? At the core is social change  Change the social norms that allow and condone violence against women  Address the root causes  FOW’s Prevention Work and Internal Partnerships  Agency’s Movement towards Prevention  Seek alternative approaches in BIP work

Successes … and … Challenges Successes -  Allowed for a different type of conversation  Encouraged participation  Created a change in participants outlook (Media Awareness, Active Bystanders, Community Accountability)  More positive messages from participants  Enhanced skills in prevention work

Successes … and … Challenges Challenges -  My Top Ten List (special population vs. general population)  Media Awareness (difficulty in recognizing influencers)  What Would You Do? Active Bystander Training (men’s immediate response to physically intervene)  40 Developmental Assets  Building empathy … quickly  Addressing Victim Blaming  Short time frame  Change in Facilitators

Reflecting on Challenges  Apply prevention work at different levels of program (Risk Levels)  Tailor material to suit special population (e.g., My Top Ten List)  Ensure that groups have both female and male Facilitators

Contributing Factors  BIP Facilitators had previous Prevention training  Rapport was already established with participants  Participants’ time in program  Eagerness from Staff to implement new activities

Assessing at Different Locations  2 Locations (Brownsville, San Benito)  3 Facilitators (2 Female, 1 Male)  4 Groups  Locations had less of an impact than the specific Facilitator assigned to group
