Introduction DNA is the carrier of genes. They are located in the nucleus. Banana have almost the same DNA as human. The lab demonstrate an understanding of how DNA looks like and how to make it visible. I learned that there’s billions of DNA inside a living soul.

Objectives ● Understand the various barriers that must be overcome prior to getting to the DNA molecule ● Explain how a buffer solution disrupts the membrane, releasing cellular components into the solution ● Describe the spooling process of DNA

Materials ● blender ● banana ● 2-50 ml beakers ● color-free shampoo ● table salt ● 1-centrifuge tube ● 10-ml syringe ● glass rod ● test tube ● test tube rack ● cheesecloth/coffee filter ● distilled water

Procedure 1.Add 1 banana and 250 ml distilled water to the blender, and blend for 20 seconds 2.To a 50 ml beaker, add 20 ml of distilled water, 1 ml of shampoo (syringe), and 2 pinches of salt 3.Add 15 ml of the banana mixture to the shampoo and salt solution 4.Filter the mixture through the coffee filter, cheesecloth, or filtering unit 5.Repeat the filtration process with another coffee filter 6.Transfer the filtrate to the test tube 7.Pour the cold 95% ethanol or 91% isopropyl alcohol into the test tube with DNA 8.Let the solution sit undisturbed for 1 minute and observe the banana DNA

Analysis The DNA of the banana look like the one shown in the picture below. Billions of DNA group together and that’s how they become visible to the naked eye. DNA are very tiny. They are made up of nucleotides. Nucleotides consist of a phosphate group, a sugar group and one of four types of nitrogen bases. There’s four nitrogen bases; Adenine, Thymine, Guanine, and Cytosine. In other words, DNAs function is to carry message around to parts of the body.
