TITLE: The Cost of Exclusivity TEXT: John 14:1-11, Acts 4:11-12 THEME: The cost of following Christ involves rejecting all other paths to God.

LDS Question “In light of all the different religions and all the different churches that are in conflict wouldn’t it be great if there were someone who could show you the true path to God?”

Response “You just told me there are hundreds of religions and denominations telling us their true path to God and now you telling me there is another one.“

How can I confidently know the truth about God and eternity?

I. Jesus guarantees the believer a place in heaven (1-4).

John 14:1-4 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

John 14:1-4 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Acts 1:6-9 “6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Acts 1:6-9 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth

Acts 1:6-9 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.”

I. Jesus guarantees the believer a place in heaven (1-4). A. This reality gives hope and comfort for the present

Troubled A very intense word in the original language. It has the idea of near panicked, highly distressed to the point of showing physical symptoms.

I. Jesus guarantees the believer a place in heaven (1-4). A. This reality gives hope and comfort for the present B. This reality gives confidence in our future.

“You trust in God, now trust in me.” This is really the foundation for finding peace to get through tough times.

How can I confidently know the truth about God and eternity?

II. Jesus reveals the way we get to heaven (5-7)

John 14:5-7 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

John 14:5-7 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Jesus told his disciples that they already knew the way to heaven. They did not understand

Jesus told his disciples that they already knew the way to heaven. They did not understand. He had not taught them how to get there

Jesus told his disciples that they already knew the way to heaven. They did not understand. He had not taught them how to get there. He did not have a lesson on 3 easy steps to get to heaven

Jesus told his disciples that they already knew the way to heaven. They did not understand. He had not taught them how to get there. He did not have a lesson on 3 easy steps to get to heaven. He did not teach on how good person must be to please God for eternity

Jesus told his disciples that they already knew the way to heaven. They did not understand. He had not taught them how to get there. He did not have a lesson on 3 easy steps to get to heaven. He did not teach on how good person must be to please God for eternity. He simply said you already know the way- and they did. They knew Him.

II. Jesus reveals the way we get to heaven (5-7) A. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He did not say I will show you the Way. He did not say I will show you the Truth. He did not say I will show you the Life. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life

John 6:47-51 John 6:” 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

II. Jesus reveals the way we get to heaven (5-7) A. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. B. Jesus is the only way to God and heaven.

Acts 4:8-12 “8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.

Acts 4:8-12 Jesus is, “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’[a] 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

John 14:8-11 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 14:8-11 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

Hebrews 1: 1-3 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
