John 4 Re-Imagining the Father: Our Projections and Jesus’ Corrections of our beliefs about God

Jesus is Exactly Like the Father

Hebrews 1 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Relating to Jesus =Relating to the Father

John 14 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

We separate the two. Jesus redirects.

John 14 8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

John 14 9 Jesus answered:"Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

Image 1: The Father is Rejecting

John 4 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Experience is our teacher.

John 4 16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." 17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

Re-Image 1: The Father is a Care Giver

John 4 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

Image 2: The Father is Demanding

John 4 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

Re-Image 2: The Father is Pursuing

John 4 21 "Woman," Jesus replied, "believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."

Image 3: The Father is Distant

John 4 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ)"is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

Re-Image 3: The Father is Here

John 4 26 Then Jesus declared, "I, the one speaking to you—I am he."
