Using Factoring and Average Trips to Fill in the Gaps in APC Data Chris Greenfield Customer Support Specialist RSM Services Corporation Houston, Texas Washington DCSan Diego CA Houston TXNew Jersey Transit

The challenge... missing data Why fill in the gaps? The solution... fill in the gaps o Sensor, GPS and other onboard failures o Correlation failures o Discards due to business rules o Factoring by day o Average trips by signup o Average trips by month o Some vehicles do not have APCs o Improper driver logon

Factoring

Factoring by day Principle: For each route, factor ridership by ratio of schedule trips in a day divided by actual APC surveys in the day

Factoring by day Hmmm, can I report 6,362 boardings for route #2 on October 1st?

Factoring by day Some trips are missing for route #2 on each day 130 trips observed 164 trips scheduled

Factoring by day 6,362 boardings x 164/130 trips 8,025 boardings 26,825 pass miles x 164/130 trips 33,841 pass miles

Factoring by day 8,025 6,362 Factored Ridership

Factoring by day Another factored report

Average Trips

Average trips Principle: Compute average boardings, alightings, loads, etc. for each service and scheduled trip. The technique yields ridership for a single day in a signup – a typical Weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Or, the technique yields ridership for a single day in a month – a typical Weekday, Saturday or Sunday.

Average trips by signup... or by month 76 observations 9:01 am trip 43 observations of 8:47 am trip One average trip

Average trips by signup... or by month... Ridership by Trip for Typical Weekday

Average trips by signup... or by month Ridership by Route for Typical Weekday

Average trips by signup... or by month Ridership by Time Period for Typical Weekday

Fill in the gaps in APC data with Factoring and Average Trips
