Driver Monitoring System for Shift Workers

Project Updates Primary Research – 26 Interviews Sl NoIndustry / ProfessionDescription 1MedicalNurses, Doctors 2ManufacturingEngineer, Plant workers 3ResearchScientist, Lab employee 4MaintenanceStaff members, Repair workers 5ServiceSecurity guards, Doormen, Janitors 6HospitalityRestaurant employees 7OthersStudents, Architects, Financial

Project Updates Users 1.Obsession with sleep 2.Frequency and patterns 3.Concerned about job and responsibilities 4.Being aware of oneself and not taking risks Primary Research – Insights Noah sharing his experience of drowsy driving

Extreme Users 1.Worried about personal safety and alertness 2.Ability to carry out regular work 3.Morning person or Night person Primary Research – Insights Project Updates

Secondary Research – Understanding Sleep Partial sleep deprivation occurs in 2 main ways: Fragmented Sleep (many arousals). ¾ of shift workers report fragmented sleep. Sleep Debt (sleeping for too little time). Shift workers sleep 4-6 hours a night, 1-4 hours less than they would on a regular schedule. Sleep Debt of 4-6 hours for 2 weeks results in significant cognitive deficits. The 4hr group was equivalent to 2 nights without any sleep on psychomotor vigilance test, test of working memory, and self-reported sleepiness Measuring physiological changes (heart rate, movement, environmental light, physical activity while wake, etc) can paint an accurate portrait of a person’s sleep quality and quantity, and then compare that to data about a person’s sleep needs. Thus, we can make educated guesses about a person’s alertness on any given day

Project Updates Persona Jill, 40 year old healthcare professional, works in the late evening shifts 9PM - 5AM, is a night person but is not comfortable driving back home early morning in a fatigued and restless condition, needs a monitoring system as she is not sure if she can do this forever. Needs a solution to ensure her safety and be able to manage her day job as well.

Project Updates How can we 1.develop tech solutions that will increase driver’s safety and combat drowsiness? 2.Analyze driver’s needs in order to personalize safety features? 3.Create awareness about issues related to drowsy driving?

Ideation Stage

Idea #1 – Acti Sync

Idea #2 – AD Campaign Real Life stress situations ( work, home, work life balance) People not getting enough sleep ( going to sleep at 1 am/2 am and waking up at 6 am) People driving without proper rest (home to work/ work to home) Almost Crashing / Swerving (causing someone in the other lane to honk) Jerking awake and realizing that you have almost caused an accident. Stats ( XXX people die in a year in new York city alone due to falling asleep behind the wheel Don’t Drive when you’re tired – Take proper rest!!!!

Idea #3 – Traffic Monitoring System
