Using Prepositions Words that link a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence. Prepositions help a reader or listener understand the relationship of one word to another. PREPOSITIONS SHOW “POSITION!”

Sometimes a few prepositions are made up of more than one word: For example: That is a good score according to the umpire. The fielders glove is next to the ball. Today, he bats first instead of batting cleanup.

It is often said never to end a sentence with a preposition It is often said never to end a sentence with a preposition. By changing the order of the words around you can often avoid using one at the end of a sentence. Here are some examples: Okay: Notice the ease Carlos hits the ball with.
